Sharlette A Kellum-Gilbert, Ph.D.

Dr. Kellum-Gilbert has been teaching at the collegiate level for over 16 years. However, she is a certified middle school and high school teacher (Texas Board Certification). She joined Texas Southern University and the Barbara Jordan Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs (BJML SPA) in the fall of 2008. Since joining the BJML SPA, she has placed over 500 Department of Administration of Justice (DAJ) students in prominent internships throughout the Houston area, as the DAJ Internship Coordinator. She has also formed a partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Houston and often requires her students to serve as weekly volunteers at a Club in their area. Students enrolled in her fall 2008 domestic violence course were able to interview random participants in and around the Houston area regarding their experiences with domestic violence and abuse. The students later developed a domestic violence prevention brochure that has been distributed to over 2,000 people…and is still being distributed today. Dr. Kellum-Gilbert has published several times in a journal created by her Alma Mater, Journal of Knowledge & Best Practices in Juvenile Justice and Psychology. She serves on several committees at Texas Southern University, including the DAJ Graduate Faculty Committee. She is also a Graduation Marshal for BJML SPA. She holds several professional memberships, including the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences and the Canadian Criminal Justice Association. She attends and speaks at several different professional conferences every year, including The American Society of Criminology Annual Meeting. Dr. Kellum-Gilbert is also a freelance writer who has won several paper competitions. The faculty and administrators of Texas Southern University voted to award her the Teacher of the Year Award in 2012. Her primary areas of research are juvenile offenders and aftercare, domestic violence, ethics, corrections, and serial killers.

-The MFT in Criminal Justice is an outcome assessment test that colleges and universities administer to measure student academic achievement in criminal justice before graduation.
