Abstract

Merline Pitre frames TSU's biography within the history of higher education for African Americans in Texas, from Reconstruction to the Supreme court decision that gives the school its start. The case, Sweatt v. Painter, involved the student Heman Marion Sweatt, denied entry into the to the University of Texas Law School because he was black.
